The Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai was completely packed on Tuesday with the fans of Indian Skipper who had arrived at the venue to watch his farewell match against England XI. These fans were actively chanting ‘Dhoni, Dhoni’.
M. S. Dhoni did not disappoint his fans by scoring a splendid and an undefeated 68 runs off 40 balls and gave an unforgettable finish to the India A innings against England XI.
While the Skipper was on the striker’s end, a member of the audience jumped 10 ft fence and dodged the security on North Stand. The runaway man successfully avoided the security and touched Dhoni’s feet. This added a pinch of happiness in the already memorable evening.
Dhoni and Hardik Pandya were talking in between overs when the spectator jumped over the wicket to touch the double World Cup-winning skipper’s feet. Mahendra Singh Dhoni was appreciative of the fan and shook hands with him before the security personnel escorted him off the ground.
Dhoni insisted that the intruder not be beaten up by the security guards. However, he was released with a warning. Entry for the match was free of cost. However, after the incident the security on the boundary line was strengthened.
Since the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar in 2013, incidents of fans running on to the ground have become uncommon.
Tuesday’s incident showed that even though Dhoni gave up the limited-overs captaincy last week, his popularity remains unsurpassed among Indian cricket lovers.
