Amazon launches it’s own shop with no workers

We have always wondered what future will look like, but we failed to realise that we are already living in the future .

Amazon has launched a new innovative Artificial Intelligent system in which you can go to a shop and pick up things you want and just leave. Yes that’s it you don’t have to wait in the checkout counters because there is no such checkout counter in this shop.

Amazon has named this physical shop as Amazon Go. To shop you just need sign in at the door, with your Amazon app by putting your phone on the sensor. And that’s it everything else is automatically taken care of. You will be picking up the things you want and if you changed your mind then you can put that back from where you had picked it up and you will not be charged for that. After shopping you just need to walk out of the shop and you will be charged on your Amazon account.

Amazon on their company website has said “Our checkout-free shopping experience is made possible by the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning,”

They further added that “Our Just Walk Out technology automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When you’re done shopping, you can just leave the store. Shortly after, we’ll charge your Amazon account and send you a receipt.”

The first shop will open in early 2017 at Seattle which will have 1800 square feet area. It will be just like a normal retail shop where product will be on shelves. Right now the store is in its Beta version and it is used only by the Amazon employees.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that cashiers are the second-largest occupation, with 3.5 million employed in the U.S. So it will be great threat to their employment opportunity. It will be interesting to see how the people and the cashiers around the US will react to it as it will definitely increase the unemployment rate.

Every country needs technology as per their need as automation should not be at the cost of human living. Even though Amazon Go will only be in US for now it will be very fascinating to imagine these type of shops in India, But I don’t think it’s the right time for India. As it will increase the unemployment more and we are just now starting to move to digital payment. So I think it will take many years for technology like this to come to India.
